Travel guide for the 2 day Rainbow Mountain trip

Planning a 2 Day Rainbow Mountain Trip is not only about reaching one of the most colorful landscapes in Peru. It is also about being prepared for the high altitude, the changing Andean weather, and the physical effort of hiking through remote mountain trails. This short travel guide will help you get ready before joining our trek, so you can enjoy the route with more comfort, safety, and confidence.

Be ready for changing Andean weather

The weather in the Andes can change quickly, especially in high-altitude areas like Rainbow Mountain. During the day, the sun can feel strong, but mornings, evenings, and nights are usually cold. Rain can also appear at any time of the year, so it is always better to pack for different conditions.

We recommend bringing warm layers, a waterproof jacket or rain poncho, gloves, a scarf, a beanie, and thermal clothing if you get cold easily. A simple plastic poncho can also be purchased in Cusco before your trip.

What to bring for the trek

For this two-day adventure, pack light but smart. Bring a small daypack with the essentials you will need while walking, such as water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, rain gear, toilet paper, personal medication, and your camera or phone.

Strong trekking shoes are highly recommended, preferably waterproof, because the trail can be dusty, muddy, or wet depending on the season. Extra socks are also useful, especially if the weather changes during the hike.

Stay hydrated during the route

We suggest starting the trip from Cusco with 1 to 2 liters of water and carrying a refillable water bottle. Staying hydrated is very important at high altitude, even if you do not feel thirsty. During the trek, your guide will advise you about safe water sources when needed, and boiled water may be provided at camp depending on the tour organization.

Avoid drinking untreated water directly from streams unless it has been purified.

How much money should you bring for your 2 Day Rainbow Mountain Trip?

Your main tour services may already be included depending on your booking, but it is always useful to carry some extra cash for personal expenses before or after the trek. Prices in Cusco and other tourist areas can vary depending on the season, local demand, and the type of service you choose.

Food and meals during the trip

During the trek, our team prepares hygienic meals with a mix of Peruvian and familiar dishes to help you recover energy after hiking. If you are vegetarian, have allergies, or follow a special diet, let us know in advance and remind the team during the briefing so we can organize your meals properly.

Camping and trekking support

On camping treks, basic equipment may include tents, a dining area, cooking equipment, and support staff. Depending on the type of service, sleeping bags, inflatable mattresses, walking poles, or extra luggage support may be available for rent.

Walking poles are especially useful on steep sections, descents, or uneven terrain, as they help with balance and reduce pressure on your knees.

Luggage and daypack tips

For a short trek like this, it is best to leave your main luggage at your hotel in Cusco and bring only what you need for the hike. Most hotels and hostels in Cusco offer luggage storage as a courtesy service.

Carry your personal items, water, camera, sunscreen, and rain gear in your daypack. Keep valuables such as your passport, money, and electronics close to you at all times.

Safety on the trail

Trekking in the Andes is generally safe, but it is important to be careful with your belongings and your health. Our trips depart with a basic medical kit and oxygen support for altitude-related situations. However, you should bring your own personal medications, especially if you have specific health needs.

If you are worried about altitude sickness, speak with your doctor before traveling and give yourself time to acclimate in Cusco before starting the trek.

Frequently asked questions

We hope this section helps you plan your 2 Day Rainbow Mountain Trek with more confidence. Here you will find practical answers about the difficulty, altitude, weather, what to bring, meals, safety, and useful travel tips.

1. Is the 2 Day Rainbow Mountain Trek difficult?

The 2 Day Rainbow Mountain Trek is considered a moderate to challenging hike, mainly because of the high altitude. You do not need to be an expert hiker, but you should be in good physical condition and comfortable walking on mountain trails. The pace is usually steady, and your guide will give you time to rest, take photos, and enjoy the landscapes along the way.

2. What is the altitude during the trek?

Rainbow Mountain is located at high altitude, above 5,000 meters / 16,400 feet. Because of this, we recommend spending at least one or two days in Cusco before the trek to help your body adjust. Walking slowly, drinking enough water, and avoiding heavy meals or alcohol before the hike can also help you feel better during the route.

3. What is the weather like on the route?

The weather in the Andes can change quickly. Mornings and nights can be very cold, while daytime can be sunny and warm when the sky is clear. Rain, wind, fog, or even snow can appear depending on the season, so it is important to bring layers, a rain jacket or poncho, gloves, a warm hat, and sun protection.

4. What should I bring for the 2 Day Rainbow Mountain Trek?

We recommend bringing a small daypack with water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, rain gear, warm layers, toilet paper, personal medication, and a camera or phone. Waterproof trekking boots are highly recommended, as the trail can be muddy, rocky, or slippery depending on the weather. Extra socks are also a good idea.

5. Do I need trekking poles?

Trekking poles are not mandatory, but they are very helpful, especially on steep or uneven sections of the trail. They can give you better balance and reduce pressure on your knees during descents. If you usually hike with poles or want extra support, we recommend bringing them or asking if they are available for rent.

6. Is water included during the trek?

You should start the tour from Cusco with at least 1 to 2 liters of water and bring a refillable bottle. During the trek, your guide will advise you about safe water sources if needed. In some camping services, boiled water may be provided in the evening or morning, but it is always important to carry enough water for the day.
