This 2 day Salkantay trek takes you along a route surrounded by snow capped mountains until you reach the quiet Humantay lagoon, an adventure hike that begins in Cusco.
The tour includes round trip transportation from the center of Cusco, and the entire route is accompanied by a local guide who knows the ancient paths built by the Incas.
Following the Salkantay route to Lake Humantay, you’ll take in uninterrupted views of the imposing peak of Mount Salkantay. Round trip transportation from your hotel in the center of Cusco is included.
Very early in the morning your mountain guide and our driver will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco.
The first stop will be in Mollepata for breakfast, then we will continue our route to Challacancha for a short rest, from this point we will begin our walk towards Soraypampa. On this first opportunity, we will begin a physical challenge that will help you acclimatize to the altitude.
We will arrive at our destination, The Sky Domes Camp which has private bathrooms and a hot hydromassage shower, located in front of the majestic and snow-capped Salkantay and Humantay, where the reception staff will be waiting for you with an exquisite lunch and then there will be some free time for us.
We will prepare to begin a light walk towards the turquoise lagoon of Humantay, 4200 meters above sea level. We will spend an unforgettable night accompanied by thousands of stars and constellations.

This travel guide walks through what each day actually looks like, from the early pickup in Cusco to the climb over Abra Salkantay, based on notes from the local guides who lead the route.
We pick you up very early from your hotel in Cusco, and the first stop is Mollepata for breakfast. It’s a good moment to meet the group and ask any last questions, because once we reach Challacancha, the trail takes over and there’s little signal or distraction from the mountains around us.
The climb from Soraypampa to the Sky Domes camp takes about 3 hours and it’s usually the point where altitude starts to test people, even fit ones. I always tell my groups this part is less about speed and more about pacing your breath. Once we arrive, lunch and a short rest help before the 3 hour round trip walk to Humantay Lake at 4,200 meters. The color of that water still catches me off guard, even after dozens of visits.
The Sky Domes camp has private bathrooms and hot showers, which sounds small until you’re standing at 3,800 meters after a full day of walking. At night, with no clouds, the dome ceiling turns into one of the clearest star views in the Cusco region. I recommend sleeping in warm layers regardless of how the tent feels at first, since temperatures drop fast after sunset.
Day two is the one people remember most. We follow a path known locally as the road of the 7 snakes, climbing steadily until we reach Abra Salkantay at 4,638 meters. It’s the highest point of the trek, and I always give the group extra time here, not just to rest but to actually look around. After the pass, we descend through a rocky landscape to Soyrococha for lunch, then continue down to Soraypampa where transportation back to Cusco is waiting.
Bring warm layers for the night at Sky Domes, sun protection for the day walks, and a headlamp for early mornings or late arrivals at camp. Cash is useful for small purchases along the way, and comfortable, broken in trekking shoes make a real difference on the descent from Abra Salkantay.
