Yacumama Lake, near Puerto Maldonado, is one of the places where travelers can take part in piranha fishing in the Peruvian Amazon. The lake is home to several freshwater fish species, including piranhas, and is surrounded by rainforest and local wildlife.
Piranhas are known for their sharp teeth and strong feeding behavior, but they generally do not pose a danger to people when handled correctly. During the activity, local guides provide instructions on fishing techniques, safe handling and catch-and-release practices.
The Piranha Fishing in Yacumama Lake Half Day Tour combines guided fishing, boat navigation and wildlife observation in a natural Amazon setting. It is a practical option for travelers looking for a piranha fishing activity near Puerto Maldonado without spending a full day on the tour.
Departure is scheduled for approximately 3:30 p.m. from Puerto Maldonado. From there, we travel to the MADAMA community and continue to Yacumama Lake, where the piranha fishing activity takes place.
Yacumama Lake is known for its sunset views and the wildlife found around its waters. During the visit, you may see macaws, parrots, parakeets, black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows and different species of piranhas. River otters may also be seen depending on the conditions and time of day.
At Yacumama Lake, we board a rowboat and continue to the designated piranha fishing area. Your guide will provide instructions and assist you throughout the activity. Small hooks are used for fishing.
When a piranha is caught, there is time to take a photograph before releasing it back into the water. This catch-and-release practice helps reduce the impact of the activity on the local ecosystem and fish population.
At approximately 6:00 p.m., we return to Puerto Maldonado, marking the end of the half-day piranha fishing tour.

Terrific three days in a jungle This is a good option to experience the jungle. This is better than other options in Peru by virtue of the proximity to the township. The guides are energetic and knowledgeable. The meals are excellent, including locally-grown ingredients. The transport transfers are safe and well-organised. Three days is probably sufficient.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Throughly Enjoyed every moment An experience we will remember forever. Thanks to German the guide and the entire crew of Peru Amazon Garden who were always around ensuring that we had a pleasant time with them. The tour we did with them was very informative and was insightful. We spotted several animals, birds and also got an insgiht into the culture and traditions. The night tour in specific was quite extraordinary. The guide made animal noises getting them off their hide outs and we could enjoy a clear sight of them, Highly recommended.
